An inexpensive electric bike!?!
Outrageous Ride!  Dude!  This is, like, totally Awesome!

Most folks want to do something to help transition the energy crisis that is coming soon (or is it already here?)  With transportation and internal combustion engines accounting for more than 60% of all oil used on the planet, it makes sense to do something different.

I ride an electric bike.  It looks and rides just like a normal bike but it has a little secret -- it has an electric motor hidden in the hub of the front wheel that zips it up to 20 miles per hour with a range of more than 20 miles!  The total cost of the package, including the bike, helmet and lock, was about $500.  The set-up came in a kit that I could install on my own bike (which  took about 30 minutes.)   And to recharge the motor, I plug it in to any conventional electrical outlet.  The energy cost works out to be about five to ten cents a mile.  It's the ultimate hybrid.

With that speed and range, it's an easy transition for commuting to work, running errands around town, or getting through grid-locked traffic at rush hour.  And parking isn't a problem either.  A little trailer hookup gives me all the cargo room I need to get home with the groceries.  The power is enough to get me up most hills, most of the time, or with just a little effortless power assist from my pedaling on really steep grades.

Because it's electric, I cruise -- I don't end up at my destination all sweaty from pumping the pedals for miles.  Do folks think my riding an electric bike means I'm lazy, or a wussy?  No way.  Clever, is a more frequent response.  But who cares if they do?  They're the one's spending $3+ a gallon to haul around a 3,000 pound machine with them every time they want a gallon of milk or a six-pack.  Want to ask me what I think about those folks?

At first I was afraid it would be difficult giving up the convenience of my car to get to where I needed to go.  It wasn't.  It just took a little mental transition that quickly became the norm.  Now I only use the car for longer-distance transportation requirements, or for picking up bulky items.  Do your own math -- imagine what this has saved me in gas.

If you are interested in getting one of these things for yourself, go here.  I'll get you hooked up, quick.
